Apple Seeds - July 2005
Sandy Pauly, Owner

Ms. Racketey Robin has a nest in our backyard. She chirps and tattles and tattles and chirps. Others squawk at her, but she just tweets her news and cold-shoulders their complaints. Oh, and we have a part-rubber squirrel. You should see him s-t-r-e-t-c-h out to the bird food!

There are many requests for Northern Minnesota bird and nature books, BUT because they are so costly (and so fantastic) most owners put them on their “keeper” shelves.

Kathy Reichs: We have been telling people who read all of Patricia Cornwell’s books, to give Reichs’ a try. Success! A-n-d, starting in September, the Fox Channel—Tuesday evenings—will air a new series “Bones” based on Reichs’ character. Emily Deschanel will star as Tempe Brennan, with the male lead none other than David Boreanaz of the vampire series, Angel. We sure can pick our authors!

Our little Opie (Ron Howard) is slated to direct Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”. The movie date: May 19, 2006.

Saw a short but attention-grabbing interview with David McCullough in a recent AARP Magazine on his new book, 1776. He still feels Washington was our greatest president, a trusted born leader in a time of great tension.

Martha Stewart figured out how to remove her “bracelet”. Tongue-in-cheek: “How clever!”

Hoo Boy. Book promos are already pushing sales of how to do your 2005 Income Tax.

Tom Clancy/Steve Pieczenik’s “Op-Center: War of Eagles” landed on the Publishers Weekly list of paperback bestsellers June 20th. Nora Roberts (Black Rose) beat out Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) her 3rd week on the bestseller list and landed in the #1 spot.

Did you know that “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon is published for adults and children—each with a different cover.

Just finished redoing the long list of Debbie Macomber’s books. As usual, the web site has mistakes, and is confusing. So I did my own. Again. Have a title/series question? Just ask.

Publishing companies are arguing back and forth regarding the value of producing specific books for sale by specific retailers such as Home Depot. (Proprietary Publishing.) There’s even a “Chicken Soup for the University Soul” for a specific university! However, the success of the “Dummies” books has some publishers rubbing their palms in glee. Interesting.

Children’s Graphic Novels are the most recent attempt to attract youngsters to reading. It seems to be working. For those new to this, the novels are similar to comic books—including the drawings—along with a complete story line. Think “Chapter Books” with lots of pictures.

Nearly 90,000 are expected July 14-18 for the anything-related-to-comic-books gathering in San Diego. As you know, we get our unread Thriller and Sci-Fi Comics from a collector in the Metro Area. They are his extras, but may be great for your collection.
Oh, by the way, I told you the new Microsoft Graphics are crappy. Well, I wanted a bird on the first item of this page, and got Lynyrd Skynrd’s “Free Bird”. Oh, for Pete’s Sake.

Frank Conroy, author & award-winning jazz pianist, passed away in April of cancer at age 69. His 12-year-old “Body & Soul” became a bestseller in France this year, and has now been optioned there for a film.

Luanne Rice: Lifetime Television will have a limited series with a 2-hour movie of her Beach Girls. Sidney Sheldon: Are You Afraid of the Dark? 1,270,000 now in print. Paperback. And—watch for his autobiography in November, The Other Side of Me.

Danielle Steel’s newest paperback, Second Chance is No. 63 in her long list of novels.

Love this ad: A Series of Unfortunate Events: The twelfth LEMONY SNICKET. “The first book since the last book.”

Idea: True name, Vampire Mosquitoes.

Beverly Lewis: Bethany House released (in June) the finale of her Abram’s Daughters Series, “The Revelation”.

Aspiring authors and poets: Remember to check Writers’ Journal Magazine for a list of contest dates, and check the website writersjournal.com. The magazine also has a column with easy hints for using Microsoft Word.

BOOK CLUBS: Let us know which books you have listed, and we’ll save them for you.

In the “Where Do They Get Their Ideas?” we found this: Kerrelyn Sparks’ novel How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire, introduces us to a (male) vampire who hires a (female) dentist to re-implant a fang. Must have one heckova bite.

A lot of the information we share is obtained from magazines such as Romantic Times BookClub (RT), Writers’ Journal (WJ) and Publishers Weekly (PW), as well as newspaper items, the internet and (of course) the storylines you pass on to us during your visits to the store. We also receive promotionals from authors and publishers, as well as their bookmarks.

More good titles: MaryJanice Davidson’s UNDEAD SERIES includes Undead and Unemployed and Undead and Unwed.

New books out in paperback: Patricia Cornwell, Maeve Binchy, Kristin Hannah, Kay Hooper, Janet Evanovich, Barbara Delinsky, and the Kellermans.

Great interview with Diana Palmer in RT. Did you know that she minored in anthropology in college—and that she has gone several digs?

Whoa-ho-ho. A drug store in NY accidentally pre sold a copy of the latest Harry Potter to a woman who said she would return it. Sure. AND, 14 books were accidentally sold July 7 at a Canadian grocery, but a judge (!) ordered the customers not to talk about the book, sell it or even read it before its official release. Uh-huh.

Take a look at the July RT. Page 62 & 63 have some pretty good websites from booklists to selling books on-line, to free stuff, to blogs, and website services for authors. You can use the www and get to romantictimes.com.

Oops. Tried emeraldcity.com for fan-run sci-fi/fantasy site and got some taxpayers’ league. That’s a real wink-wink.

Okay, ladies, here’s the thing—Harlequin Temptations are kaput, done gone. Elbow the gal with a smirk on her face, that line produced some pretty fantastic authors: LaVyrle Spencer’s “Spring Fancy” was the First Harlequin Temptation! Here’re a few more: Judith McNaught, Barbara Delinsky, Jane Ann Krentz (#11), Jennifer Crusie, & Carla Neggers,

Keep cool. Hug your kids. Read a book.

Gotta go—Bye!
