Missing a family picture? We find lots of items inside novels that readers used for bookmarks: Airline passes, photos, candy bar wrappers, recipes and flyers. The photos must have been important, so please check your books before bringing them into the store.
In that vein (see Prof. Bill, I used your word of the day) we found an older profile of successful Christian author Lori Wick tucked inside a book. At 28, she began hand-writing her first novel. Not deterred by rejections, Wick’s book was finally accepted, and the rest is history. Not as simple as it sounds, but her faith held true.
We’ve seen a renewed interest in Phillip Margolin’s books. AND, of course, the TV movie of Robert Forsythe’s “Icon” has led to increased sales of his novels.
Jamie Lee Curtis has published some great children’s books. This time she, and co-author Laura Cornell, have an “I’m Ready for Kindergarten” kit. You can visit her site: jamieleecurtisbooks.com for more information.
Carl Hiaasen, suspense writer (Strip Tease, etc.) has published “Hoot”, a 2004 Newberry Honor children’s book that already has 1.1 million copies sold.
Is it laziness that has us dialing long distance without using a 4¢ a-minute phone card? 14¢ per minute should stop me from direct dialing, especially every time I open the phone bill! My cell phone minutes are unused BECAUSE WE CANNOT HEAR EACH OTHER.
Lee Child: Killing Floor, Die Trying, Tripwire, Running Blind, Echo Burning, Without Fail, Persuader, The Enemy & now (HC) One Shot.
From a Publisher’s Weekly (PW) e-mail: Book Expo had a LOUD seminar on how to get young adults to read, why are so many exercise books focusing on women’s big butts—but anything about men is taboo, book pricing, and reminders that there are other authors/readers than those in New York. Hoo-rah.
Reminder: Nora Robert’s Black Rose was available May 31st. (2nd in the new trilogy.) AND, watch for J.D. Robb’s Origin in Death on July 16, in hardcover.
Linda Lael Miller’s Mekettrick Cowboys trilogy: High Country Bride, Shotgun Bride and Secondhand Bride. (The last one was out in December, so we should be getting some more of those in the store.)
Because of lagging sales, Harlequin/Silhouette has revamped their novel criteria. A lot of the books now look (& read) like other mass market novels. Try an author you are familiar with.
Had a good time reading John Sandford’s Hidden Prey. It takes place in Duluth, Hibbing, Virginia – you know, “The Range”. Lucas Davenport stayed at the Radisson in Duluth, with the rotating dining room on top.
Nancy Taylor Rosenberg: Carolyn Sullivan Series started with Sullivan’s Justice, and now we have Sullivan’s Law in hardcover.
Jeffery Deaver: Another in the Lincoln Rhyme series, The Twelfth Card, is in print.
Robert James Waller also has a new novel in print: High Plains Tango.
Where are the P.J. Tracy> books???????? Big Question: Why are we restricting the return of some books? Because if the same books are being returned over and over, there would be no room for variety, no room for new authors, no room for recent novels. We strive for variety, and other than some old favorites, we try to keep our shelves full of popular, current novels for our readers.
832 pages thick (that’s really thick!), and containing five novels from The Hitchhiker series, Douglas Adams was on the paperback bestsellers list in May with his “The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”.
We just heard that “Waiting for White Horses” area author, Nathan Jorgenson, is listed as one of the nominees for three (3) separate awards. Which reminds me, have you checked out our Area Author shelves lately? More good reads!
DO NOT tell Sharon: There is a bookstore in Troy, Ohio that has a resident ghost. Wearing an old-fashioned coat & a green hat, he prowls around slamming doors and sends spinner racks twirling. (We’ve had some Amityville Horror basements, but the only thing prowling around was a mouse or two.)
Just noticed: Romantic Times BookClub Magazine is now listing our “Romantic Fantasy” books as “New Reality”. Really? And all this time I thought those time travels and vampire novels were fantasy. Did I miss something? Quick, get me a newspaper.
Remember Fabio??? He is marketing low-cost fashionable clothing for…SAM’S CLUB. Tested in 2002, his winter coats shot purchases up 500%. Wow. Wonder if there’s a picture of him on the label.
Kristin Hannah sold her novels Summer Island and On Mystic Lake to Ziegler Film.
Leigh Greenwood. So many romance readers love HER books. Um, Leigh is a guy.
June 21st. Mark the date. Janet Evanovich will have (hardcover) “Eleven On Top” on store book shelves, and “Ten Big Ones” shows up in paperback.
Yep. I got one. One of those e-mails from a “bank” asking for information. Did they get my name from a company that I ordered something from? They sell names, you know. Be careful. Be very careful. (Don’t you wish that at times you could be a witch and hex those creeps: like maybe they could develop a huge stain on their pants in front of a crowd?)
“The Colonel and Little Missie” is a new biography of Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley, now in print by none other than—Larry McMurtry.
A western by mystery author, Robert B. Parker, titled “Appaloosa” is receiving raves.
“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” written by Delia Ephron, is now a movie!
Finally found Linda Howard’s website: lindahowardbooks.com. It’s awful. She’s such a terrific (and busy) author, maybe she doesn’t know how bad it is. No book listings, she’s married, has 2 dogs and here’s how to buy her latest book, amen.
We are working on our own website. Again.
ALSO, my high school class (Walker/Hackensack’s first year together waaayy back when) is planning a quick get-together on the July 4th weekend. Exciting. Because it was such short notice, not everyone can attend—which is unusual for all of us. It’ll still be nice to give hugs to everyone there.
The Cass County Historical Society has $1.00 Off coupons to use for your visit to the Museum and the Little School House. Ask us for one.
Gotta go—Bye! |
