Apple Seeds - May 2005 Sandy Pauly, Owner
Got a fisherman/woman in the family and want to them home now and then? Try Victoria Huston’s light fishing mysteries. They’re easy-reading, entertaining and “thin” enough to be read in one or two evenings.
If you’ve gone from one room to another and can’t remember why – or what it was you were going to do or get, don’t despair. Howard Engel, a Canadian mystery writer who had a stoke that affected his memory, recently signed a two book contract –and one of them has his hero suffering a similar difficulty. That’s an author with fortitude!
Another mystery author, T. Jefferson Parker, just signed a two book deal for a seven figure amount. That must have been the “Yah hoo!” heard across three states.
I just had another embarrassing telephone conversation. I was ordering gift items for the store and could not understand the operator. He tried speaking slowly and clearly, but my continuous “What?” was wearing us both down. Shame on the company for placing such a nice man in a job that he’s not qualified for.
It’s a hardcover, but John Sandford’s latest, Broken Prey, is in print. Look for some iPod humor to offset the action-packed Minnesota suspense. This is his 16th Prey book.
Remember when we told you about the kids’ book series, Walter the Farting Dog? Well, “Winchell Cuts The Cheese” is the latest for kids, 3-6 yrs. Kids here are asking for “Junie B. Jones” & “Magic Tree House” books.
Gaaah. Went to sip my coffee and a mosquito was there. Belly up. Last year’s Children’s Book listed as PWs #1 Hardcover: “The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events #11)” by Lemony Snicket. Graphic Novels and Books for Kids: Watch for BATMAN this summer.
Louis L’Amour. Bantam Books is celebrating 50 Years of publishing his books. Did you know that 100 million copies have been sold since his death? And, as an author, he had been awarded a Congressional Gold Medal and The Presidential Medal of Freedom?
We are celebrating our Anniversary this month! 14 years ago (1991, if you don’t have a calculator handy) we opened our store where you’ll now find Benson’s restrooms. Hey, don’t laugh –it was a cute, little rustic store, and we were having the time of our lives! Thank you, Nina.
She is the lady you saw behind the counter from the beginning, through 9 ½ years. I’m sure she banged her head against the wall many times at my obvious lack of business experience. But, she persevered. Nina, my friend, my mentor.
(Before you get all teary-eyed, Nina is retired and gets to read any time she feels like it!!)
Alexander McCall Smith. In addition to the 1,000 words-a-day newspaper series, he’s now promoting his ready-to-publish 12 books!!
Among the pages and pages listing top selling books for the past year, fans of Nora Roberts will be pleased to note that she “…continues to have more bestsellers than any other author” according to Publisher’s Weekly.
Great hardcover ad for Frank Peretti’s Monster: It announces the “street” date. We’ve got some “Cheater Glasses” for you to borrow in the store. BUT, guess what? Several publishing companies are now coming out with “mass upperbacks” – a little taller, slimmer paperback with a larger type and a little more space between the lines. It’s for the baby-boomers+. We’ve had many grousing about not being able to read “that lousy printing”--it’s about time something was done. Clive Cussler, Minette Walters, Maeve Binchy, Nora Roberts, Barbara Delinsky, Ann Rule and Sandra Brown are among the starters. Meanwhile, until we get some of $9.95 books in, you can use our cheaters! Just ask.
Mickey Spillane: A sensual book cover; a no-holds-barred private eye mystery steaming off the inside pages. A cocky Mike Hammer. Spillane’s Books: Nasty little pocketbooks – censured by haughty, little old ladies and high school superintendents. Then actors such as Stacey Keach invaded our television space. Did you know that in 1963 Mickey Spillane starred as Mike Hammer in “The Girl Hunters”? A classic American Author!!
Mary Higgins Clark: Nighttime is My Time now has a printing of 1,750,000, with hardcover No Place Like Home sitting at the #3 spot. Sooo, because our customers are rereading her books, we’ve given her a shelf of her own—over by John Grisham’s.
One of our readers has been penning his family history, tales of his war experiences and memoirs of his parents’ early years. What a precious gift for his children and grandchildren. (Historical Societies would love copies!!)
We are in the talking stages of starting a prose writing group this fall. A published area author indicated he would be glad to speak about the process of self-publishing. Please let us know if you are interested.
Ted Nelson Lundrigan, attorney and author, will have his third book out this fall!
Did you see the picture in the local paper this spring? Dr. Otto F. Ringle, DDS, has indeed reprinted his popular ‘Tanks Fur Comin’, and the books are on our shelves!
Prehistoric Novels: Authors such as Jean Auel, William Sarabande, the Gears and Sue Harrison have flown off our shelves recently—which is good for us and not so good for you. We need more. We have thousands of books in our storage rooms, but our supply of prehistoric novels is incredibly low.
Oprah will be releasing a self-help book in September. Top articles of “O”, including some from Dr. Phil and even Oprah, will be compiled in the 29.95 hardcover.
Sounds good: With film rights ready for signing, Josh Wold, staff reporter for Entertainment Weekly, describes his turn as a camp counselor in the book Cabin Pressure. Haven’t heard of the book release date…
Here are some book-to-movie deals: 1776 by David McCullough. The Best Awful by Carrie Fisher. The Devil’s Banker and The Patriots Club by Christopher Reich. Nightmares & Dreamscapes by Stephen King.
Stewart Woods is flying his own plane across the country promoting his new hardcover Two-Dollar Bill. At the same time, paperback Prince of Beverly Hills is at #15. Busy man!
It’s baaack: “The Fog” by Rob MacGregor & Bruce Gernon—a new theory of the Bermuda Triangle. Looks interesting!
When the weather starts getting too hot (!) remember that C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe will be in theaters—in December!
Message to Prof. Bill: Mr. P planted two more trees.
Welcome back, Sharon! Have a great summer, everyone!
Gotta go—Bye! |
