Mojo Sheepshanks. (by Linda Lael Miller.) Two novels. Can’t wait for a third. Wow. The second book moves faster and smoother, both are GOOD READS about Mojo a wannabe PI who just happens to see dead people. She doesn’t like it—seeing dead people that is—but they find her anyway. They are endearing, and you hate to see them leave, but after all…
Oh, yeah, about that last line in book #2. If you see Linda, would you tell her I said to get book #3 out RIGHT NOW!
J.D. Robb’s “Salvation in Death” and “Ritual in Death” (in anthology Suite 606) are out early November. AND the final book in the Sign of Seven trilogy will be on shelves at the end of November; it’s “The Pagan Stone”.
David Baldacci’s 4th Camel Club “Divine Justice” hits shelves on November 4th. Hardcover. Of course.
Sarah Palin’s e-mails of banned books a hoax—according to Publishers Weekly. And the list just got longer and longer. Supposedly fun while it lasted—for everybody but her, I’d guess.
Goodness. Set to be released March, 2009 with film rights already bought by George Clooney, endorsed by Lee Child in “John leCarre fashion”, along with Thomas Perry and Nelson DeMille, Olen Steinhauer’s “The Tourist” has one heck of a promo. This CIA’s (once) most dangerous “tourist” must be better than, “Bond, James Bond.”
Sue Monk Kidd’s “The Secret Life of Bees” while still a bestseller, is now a hit movie, too!
The Student Loan Scam by Alan Michael Collinge. Credit Cards or even better, Debit Cards, can turn into rip offs. Well, your student loan can follow you right into the casket! Lives have been ruined through the corporate thug tactics employed by some of the nation’s largest student loan providers in this shocking expose by Collinge. Bankruptcy cannot erase or reduce a student loan. Screw up, pay late, interest could double, triple: $2,000 could turn into $200,000. Really. Read all about it.
The Goliath Bone (hardcover on October 12) by Mickey Spillane was completed by Max Allan Collins. (Spillane: You know, “Mike Hammer”.)
Steve Berry’s advise, “Never, ever give up.”
It took seven years and 85 rejections before this co-president of the International Thriller Writers first book was published.
From Publishers Weekly, 9/29/08: “Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession Anne Rice discusses her 38 years of atheism and her renewed belief in Christ.” Huh.
Charlaine Harris, vampire romance author, (she’s not a vampire, she writes romances about vampires!) had seven—yep—seven, novels at the same time on various bestseller lists this fall. They like ‘em sexy, and they like ‘em undead.
Oh, great. When researching this newsletter I ran into the ad for “Critical Conditions: The Essential Hospital Guide to Get Your Loved One Out Alive.” Since I’ve been dealing with doctors so much, I flipped the page quickly before I started getting imaginary symptoms. It’s a miracle, I’m cured! I’ll just stay home.
“Change Your BRAIN, Change Your Life”
With 460,000 in print (paperback), Daniel G. Amen, M.D. will now have “Magnificient Mind at Any Age” out December 2—and will also have its own PBS show. If I can remember, I should try to watch it.
“Udon debuts Manga line for Kids.” That was a headline I spotted. There are a few Manga lines—Pokemon, for one—that are for younger children. But, most are not kid-friendly. Yet.
Here’s a book for kids’ Christmas: J.K. Rowling’s “The Tales of Beedle the Bard”. The net proceeds will go to the Children’s High Level Group. That’s a charity Rowling co-founded in 2005. The book to be on shelves December 4th.
Look for Davis Bunn & Janette Oke’s new series surrounding the birth of Christianity. The first (Hardcover) book will be in print January 2009, and titled “The Centurion’s Wife.”
I didn’t know that, did you know that? Chef Julia Child worked as a spy for the OSS, a kind of CIA before there was a CIA, during WWII.
Remember to buy the Romantic Times Book review Magazines for the Giveways and Contests. Oh, yes, and for the more than 250 new books reviewed and all of the interviews and special reviews.
We’re not being fair about James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series: Sorry, but we’ve been putting the books in the adult Mystery shelves, because that’s where they’ve been selling.
Studs Terkel: 1912 – 2008
Clive Cussler released his 20th Dirk Pitt adventure (Artic Drift), in November, which is also the fourth novel he’s coauthored with his son Dirk.
OOoooo, Publishers Weekly (PW) really panned Dean Koontz’s “Your Heart Belongs to Me.” But, I guess I react differently. Whenever I see a bad review, it just makes me want to read the book! Besides, I like Dean Koontz.
M
Jeffery Deaver has had a stand-alone “The Bodies Left Behind” out since November, and we understand that his Lincoln Rhyme “The Sleeping Doll” is now in paperback.
This time of year we see so many Area Author Books selling as Christmas Gifts. Thank you, Customers! Our Area Authors are talented individuals with a story or two (or three or more) to tell. Isn’t it wonderful? All that talent out there? Do you have your novel shoved under your bed or in the attic? Get it out and check it over, bring it to our Writers Group, we would be glad to help.
Did you know that William Kent Krueger and Vince Flynn were
self-published before becoming so
popular that hotshot publishers “found” them?
By the way, Vince Flynn’s “Extreme Measures” is still on PW’s bestsellers list. Hardcover, though.
After having them for close to 40 years, Mr. P’s hunting partner gave up her Papa’s shells and bought new ones. And bagged herself a buck this year. Mr. P & Robby & Rick were super pleased. She is invited over to partake any time she wants!!
Oh, and one of our very young grandsons, who shadows his daddy, also got himself a nice buck this year!
It’s time to thank our Sherry & Karen for all they have done to keep the store going. To thank our Prof. Bill for the laughter, for the word games and the best mentoring ever. To our Illinois-world-traveling best-book-getters, thanks again. To all of you who send prayers, thanks and God Bless. To ALL our Customers, a great big Thank You to each of you – and we’ll see you in 2009!
Gotta go…Happy Holidays!…… |
