Newsletters

September/October 2007

Our hours are still 10:00 to 5:00 every day, except on Sunday--when we close at 3:00.

We will post any hour/day changes should they occur before mid-November.

I know this newsletter has been missing—sorry!  Not enough hours in a day.

Have you looked at the books on the counter?  It’s unbelievable!  We have Area Author, Terry Oliver Mejdrich’s 4th Northern Minnesota suspense novel, “Ghosts in the Heart”, AND a Limited First Edition stack of Nathan Jorgenson’s “the mulligan”.  Word is out, and these autographed books are disappearing so fast.  I have read both, and am more than willing to give you a little synopsis of these great novels.

AND, at this writing, I’m giving myself 15 minutes of typing, then it’s back to reading “Hawk’s Valley”.  Almost done with that fictionalized Minnesota history novel, “Sophie’s Hawk” is already waiting on the dining room table.  Authors Arvid Lloyd Williams and Bonnie Shallbetter have also just sent Book #3 to the printers.

            The above Area Author Novels

            have outsold our best “guestimates”

            as we continue to reorder.

Nora’s News” is an exceptional monthly email newsletter from Nora Roberts.  Start with www.noraroberts.com and sign up.  Her latest (hardcover) “High Noon” showed up on shelves July 10th.  In December watch for “Blood Brothers” the first of her new trilogy.

AND, back in July, Roberts threw out the first pitch at the Hagerstown Suns game – with a Nora Roberts bobblehead doll going to the first 1,000 fans.  Bobblehead for an author.  Now that’s something new!

J

National Public Radio (NPR):  Publisher’s Weekly had a notice on its email (by Judith Rosen) that stated indies (Independent Booksellers) are really upset at NPR and their Buy This Book list, because “the link goes right to Amazon.com and no one else”.

That’s not very nice!  A lot of indies are talking about pulling their NPR donations.

Romantic Fantasies:  Author, Yasmine Galenorn, (Sisters of the Moon series) is a shamanic witch, and has been involved in witchcraft since 1980.  Her picture kind of turned me off – looks like a fortune teller in a circus.

HOWEVER, Maggie Shayne comes across as someone different.  With a four-page listing of romance novel awards, this Elder in the Wiccan faith is also a Third Degree High Priestess.  She seems, I suppose in layman’s terms, a “white witch”.  And, I love her books.

A summer Romantic Times Book Reviews Magazine (RT) featured Dean Koontz AND James Rollins.

Koontz, promoting his latest, “The Good Guy” said his wife (Gerda) is responsible for giving him a dream career.  She said she’d support him for five years (no negotiations either!) to give his writing a try.  It worked.

Rollins (James Dzajkowski) a veterinarian, amateur spelunker & scuba diver is also James Clemens, fantasy novelist.  He admits to receiving 49 rejections before selling his first novel.  Look for his latest, “The Judas Strain”.

See, I had this really good thing going.  I received Publisher’s Weekly and their daily emails.  And, see, the subscription ran out.  Then instead of a “you’d better hurry up and pay”, I get this “free” subscription offer from them.  Happily I mailed it.  Now, I don’t get the magazine!     ????

We always need books by:  Jodi Picoult, Karen Kingsbury, Lorna Landvik, Lauraine Snelling, William Kent Krueger and Vince Flynn.

By the way, Krueger’s newest (“Thunder Bay”) is out there—in hardcover.  Because I can’t wait for the paperback, I’ll buy it with the excuse that my brother-in-law would really like to read it.  (After me, of course.)

Vince Flynn’s paperback “Act of Treason” is, naturally, a bestseller.  The list of “fans” includes George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, former CIA director Porter Goss.  Ahem, the “fan thing” must have been AFTER Flynn was investigated.  The question:  How did he know so much about terrorism?  As he said on Larry King Live, “Turn on your computers!”

Went to peterstraub.net and found the author’s crazy website.  Boy does that man like words—lots of words.  I think he has a dry sense of humor, and the bio (intentionally?) read like another “War and Peace”.

Readers around the world had to say a sad good-bye to Minnesota author, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, who passed away July 6th.  Remember “The Flame and The Flower” and “The Wolf and The Dove”?  Those two books, along with “Shanna” and “Ashes in the Wind” are being reprinted.  Many fans agree her first four books (above) were the best.

Nice for a laugh—great interview in September Romantic Times with Diana Gabaldon.  But, pictures of her book shelves—wow, what a mess.  Her “Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade” made the hardcover bestseller list.

Interesting Note:  A reader asked for S.E. Hinton’sThe Outsiders” for a college class.  I was surprised to find we had sold the books.  However, checking on Barnes and Noble’s Website—another surprise:  The 1967 novel is still one of their bestsellers!

Angie Harmon (Law & Order) will star in an ABC TV series based on James Patterson’sWomen’s Murder Club”.  I guess I wasn’t aware that Patterson’sSuzanne’s Diary for Nicholas” had been filmed for TV.  I gotta get a life!

25 Years = 100 Books = Cassie Edwards!

Mr. P now has his garden produce in jars and in the three freezers.  The apple trees were so full he tied them together so they wouldn’t fall over.  (Many of our readers received apples with their purchases.)  We are going to dine very well this winter.

Dick Francis and son, Felix, have written “Dead Heat”.  The mystery premiered September 22.

Terry Brooks latest “The Elves of Cintra” is a PW hardcover bestseller.  After penning fantasy

novels since 1977, Brooks will publish his first graphic novel next spring.

Kathy Reichs’Bones to Ashes” also made the list.  Sigh – another hardcover.

Debbie Macomber’s74 Seaside Avenue” hit the Number One spot for Paperback/Mass Market

          books.  Applause, please!

Iris Johansen and son (Roy Johansen—an Edgar Award-winning screenwriter & novelist) have just

signed a deal for two thrillers to be released next summer.

Thomas L. Friedman’sThe World is Flat” has been on the bestseller list, too.  That’s pretty

fantastic for a book written in 2005.

Prof. Bill is on this “Fruit & Veggie” kick (As in “Cool as a cucumber”.)  Corny, but once you start, it could go on for hours!

Visit and join our Walker Writers’ Group.

We meet at the store every 2nd & 4th

      Thursday at 5:15 pm.

Hey!  Did “someone” read this newsletter?  I just received a Publishers Weekly magazine!

Gotta go…Watch the leaves fall…… <v:imagedata o:title="j0359525" src="file:///C:DOCUME~1OwnerLOCALS~1Tempmsohtml1
