The AUGUST newsletter is almost ready to transfer to the website - I've been sooooo busy, that July news kind of got waylaid! ALSO -- Just a reminder: Our summer hours are 10:00 to 5:00 every day EXCEPT Sundays, when we close at 3:00.
Have a great day!
To those of you who remember creating May Baskets out of construction paper, pipe cleaners, paper lace doilies and gobs of white paste made from flour and water, Happy May Day!
Will Weaver enrolled in a Northwest Tech automotive course to “be up to speed” toward authoring a series of racing books for young boys. “The Bookmobile” will race at the Bemidji Speedway and other area tracks. The Bemidji Pioneer (5/2/07) had a terrific front page story about Weaver, the books, the car and the lucky young man (Skyler Smith, 16) chosen to race. We hope for more articles about the books and, of course, Team Will Weaver.
Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child: They have a great website: prestonchild.com. Give it a try.
It lists their books, as well as the solos.
Johanna Lindsey readers: She has NO website. If you “Google” her, you get a publisher’s lousy site that does NOT have a printable list of her books—just several genre groups to pick from—with cover pictures. (Which would be okay if you have a lot of money for printer ink!)
Karen Robards: The interview in Romantic Times (April) was a good read, and the excerpt from her new book “Obsession” (hardcover!) was a real teaser—I want to read it!
Breaking News: (We should have one of those trailers running across the bottom of the page.) Area Author Terry Mejdrich has a new book “Ghosts In the Heart” being printed right at this moment! Number Four of his series will be in the store before Memorial Day.
Congratulations, Terry Oliver Mejdrich!
Another round of applause goes out to Ernest Francis Schanilec. His newest book will be in the store in June! The novel follows the story of Grey Riders (Book No. 5 —the ancestor’s stories of protagonist, Tom Hastings).
Wendy Corsi Staub’s “Don’t Scream” is in print, receiving a 4« (Phenomenal) rating.
Lee Child’s latest “Bad Luck and Trouble” is in hardback, as is James Grippando’s “Lying With
Strangers”.
Elizabeth Lowell’s “The Wrong Hostage” arrives in bookstores June 19.
We wish we had some Karen Kingsbury, Lauraine Snelling and Beverly Lewis books. They’re
all gone. Again.
David Baldacci (“He worked his way through college as a Pinkerton security guard and by
washing and detailing 18-wheel trucks.”) has “Simple Genius” out in Hardcover.
Harlequin (H®H) is changing its publishing format with “thicker” romantic westerns, fantasies, contemporaries and mysteries. The books, written by well-known romance authors, are receiving lots of 4« reviews.
I’m reading James Patterson’s “Maximum Ride: School’s Out—Forever” even though I hadn’t read “Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment”. I’m hooked. AND, “Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports” is in print—in Hardcover.
(Follow-up books to “When The Wind
Blows” and “The Lake House”.)
May and June are graduation months. We (believe it or not!) have no grandchildren graduating this year—first time in a long time! But, we do congratulate our Michelle Wallin!
Because readers tend to keep Nature Books, we decided to order new Field Guide Books on Minnesota Birds, Critters (Pocket Guide), Trees and Wildflowers. Fun and informative!
Our No. 2 daughter is getting married soon, and Mr. P was told NO blue jeans! He got a sports coat, dress slacks, a shirt, tie and shoes. I got Advil. The only exciting thing during those shopping hours was the sight of a teenage boy with eight braids (bushy ends) wobbling straight up from the top of his head—looked like a neglected tree farm.

AREA/MINNESOTA AUTHORS: “Hawk’s Valley: A Good Place to Die” by Arvid Lloyd Williams and “Sophie’s Hawk” by Williams & Bonnie Shallbetter. One reader called and asked if we would put them in our store. Talk about “doo-doo-do-doo” – Shallbetter had just been here and autographed the books for us! THEN a couple returning to their summer home stopped in and asked if I had heard about the books. Historical fiction at its best.
Prior publicity indicated V.C. Andrews’ daughters were completing the book outlines she prepared prior to her death more than 20 years ago. However, we have learned Andrew Neiderman (Finding Satan) is ghost writing Andrews’ novels. (Publishers Weekly 3/26/07)
We Google a lot, trying to find info on authors or series. But, once again readers thank Heidi for the best mystery author/protagonist website: stopyourekillingme.com. If you remember Stephanie Plum (protagonist) but not Janet Evanovich (author) you simply click on “P” then click on Plum, Stephanie! Or vice versa. You will often be given the author’s website.
Eileen Goudge: Deciding that life had more to offer this welfare mom, Goudge borrowed a typewriter and “just started writing”. Authoring magazine articles and teen romances, Goudge’s first adult novel “Garden of Lies” led the way to a successful career.
Email Addresses are like telephone numbers. At the hint not too long ago to add a number somewhere in your address, it seemed too late—everybody was already used to the one you had!
Urban Fantasies. What a stupid name. Like, a Romantic Fantasy can’t be in the ‘burbs?? This so-called “Urban Fantasies” thing is supposedly covering romantic fantasies—which were called “New Age Fantasies” for about a year. Stop the presses, quit changing the genre, and call it what it is, people. Publishers, grrrrr.
Bless our readers. A “Sci-Fi Lady” spent some time with us finding Science Fiction and Fantasy that is kid friendly. Book covers are deceiving, and parents could go into shock after finding out what their kids are reading. We watch a LOT of Sci-Fi on TV, but aren’t quite up to par on the authors/books.
Our Walker Writers’ Group is doing well. You are most welcome to join us! We meet at the store every 2nd & 4th Thursday at 5:15 pm. Our prose writing group is open to those working on novels, articles or memoirs or to those with a desire to write. We are positive motivators!
