Apple Seeds – January/February 2006

Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas:  Publishers Weekly (PW) stated that Random House has shipped 200,000 copies of this book EVERY YEAR since its publication in 1957.  Huh.

Metro Girl is not quite as funny as Stephanie Plum, but Janet Evanovich has written her into a hilarious scene on a Florida beach while accompanied by her former high school classmate—a gay interior decorator.

Su Duko or Sudoku.  For those not in the know, the puzzle is a weird-looking crossword-like box with a few numbers printed here and there.  You fill in numbers so that every row, column and 3x3 box contains every number from 1 to 9.  Mr. P has found a new hobby.

Speaking of numbers, I read that over 1 billion books are sold worldwide each year.  (They never called me for our totals!)

Tried reading “Running With Scissors” by Augusten Burroughs.  Well, um, I don’t believe in banning books, but (my opinion) this thing should have been put in a thick plain brown wrapper, sprinkled with lye and thrown down an outhouse hole.

February print date:  Alex Kava’s A Necessary Evil.  It’s the 5th book in this really good series, starring Maggie O’Dell.

**Romantic times BookClub Magazine is looking for Book Reviewers!  Check out the February magazine and give it a try!  Talk about an ideal career for someone who reads a lot!

Remember Jaws?  In 2005, author Peter Benchley published his “Shark Life:  True Stories About Sharks and the Sea” for children.

Other popular authors also writing for kids:

Carl Hiaasen, Garrison Keillor, Anne Tyler, James Patterson, Walter Mosley, Ridley Pearson, Joyce Carol Oates, Louise Erdrich, David Baldacci, Alice Hoffman.

And as previously mentioned, Clive Cussler has “The Adventures of Win Fiz”.

TEST DRIVE A BOOK:

Another chance at reviewing:  Do the www.  Then do medallionpress.com & fill out the form under Test Drive.  After reading the mailed book, galley, or ARC & after submitting your comments & if they are posted on the site, you might win a copy of one of their future releases.  Vroooooom.

13.  So, what’s the big deal of a “bad” #13?  Two of our kids were born on the 13th.  So, what’s the big deal that ISBNs are soon going to be 13 numbers?  666 is the number that gives me the willies.

****WALKER AUTHOR, Lois Templin:  Again, WOW.  One of eleven, nationwide, Lois and her novel “Highland Revenge” were picked by Romantic Times for the American Title II contest.  Winning only by votes, Lois made it through the first round—which is quite an accomplishment for someone from Walker, MN.  Publishers now know her name!

A customer asked about William Sarabande’s pre-historic novels.  Well, I had a terrible time finding a correct listing.  Sarabande does not have a website, and the listings inside the paperback covers were not always in order.  So, the “First American Series” (according to the copyright dates) are:  Beyond the Sea of Ice, Corridor of Storms, Forbidden Land, Walkers of the Wind, the Sacred Stones and Spirit Moon.  He has 7 other non-series novels.

A “CSI” paperback by Max Allan Collins had a sneak preview of a CSI Graphic Novel.  (Similar to comics; book form.)

Owning this store is FUN—except for the bookkeeping & taxes.  I could be reading a good novel instead of all this stuff, ya know.

Prose Writer Group:  Wow!  We started with 9 people; a snowbird will join when she gets back, and had an inquiry about joining from a guy “up north”.  We meet here at the store every other Thurs. at 5:15 pm & at the Library every other Wed. at 11:00 am.  Check with us for dates/places.  Fiction writing, non-fiction, novels, short stories, memoirs and creative non-fiction writers are welcome.

AREA AUTHORS:

***Northwoods Expressions” (2nd volume) by the Northwoods Writers Group of

Laporte.  (By the way, they are taking submissions for Volume 3, to be published in

      2007.)

*** Ernest Francis Schanilec:  6 suspense stories that take place in

       Minnesota and North Dakota.

Wondering what books to get your kids?  The lists are really long, so take the easy way out and check on oprah.com and the “Kids Reading Lists”.  Books are listed by age groups.

By the way, 2.7 million Junie B Jones’ books sold in 2005, with Magic Tree House at 6.8 million and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants at 5 million.

~ ~ ~   Join Walker’s One Community, One Book.

Buy Will Weaver’s book here in the store.   ~ ~ ~

Louis L’Amour:  Volume 3 of his short story collection is now in print.

Had a brain glitch.  Forgot to remind you that Lisa Jackson (Romance and now Mystery Author) also wrote under Susan Lynn Crose (her real name?).  She has a great website at lisajackson.com, and also at nancybush.net.  She was doing extra babysitting when she and her sister started writing.  Guess I’d better check back in my records for more info—website doesn’t give that “older” stuff anymore.

Our terrific Illinois people brought us BOXES of books in December.  They’re pretty much sorted now, so if you don’t see a certain book on the shelves, just ask!

Happy Valentine’s Day to our Bill.

Our family gave us a “surprise” (we found out) Anniversary Party.  It was GREAT.  I forgot to get Mr. P a card.  Sad, huh?

Gotta go…bye for now…
