Little Apple LogoGlance to the right as you enter the store. See the wall pockets full of books? They are our pride and joy, and almost all of them are autographed by our area authors. Several of the authors have now made it to the "big box" bookstores. I myself was one of the three authors of the Walker on Leech Lake Centennial Book and one of the four of the Cass County Heritage Book. The excitement we felt at unloading a semi full of our books just cannot be explained.

It starts with Halloween, quickly touches on Thanksgiving, then all of a sudden it's Black Friday, which just bounces into Christmas then ends with New Year's Eve!

Yes, it's a very hectic time of year! And, if Jim Proebstle's site is any indication, authors remain busy all year long. Writing "In the Absence of Honor" and now, "Fatal Incident", Jim already has book signings scheduled way into July 2012—with November and December of this year jam packed.

I just finished reading a book submitted to us by Dennis "BArny" Bartz, of Bemidji, Minnesota.. (The "A" in Barny is upside down!) The book is called, "Run for Your Life." And no, he's not running from the law. At least he didn't tell us that! He happens to be one of those RUNNERS—you know a "Grandma's Marathon" in Duluth and "Eelpout Peel-out" on Leech Lake kind of runner!

I don't run. I have no desire to run. My head hurts just thinking about running. But, I ended up breathing in rhythm with Dennis as he ran; sucking in air when he described coming close to "the wall."

Hopefully, an email will cement a new relationship with Dennis (Barny) Bartz, the runner from Bemidji.

Hurrah! We have a new children's book on the shelves—authored and illustrated by Joanne Moren of Hackensack, Minnesota. (If her name sounds familiar, she's the lady who was instrumental in starting the Arts Day in Hackensack!) This wonderful addition is not only a colorbook, but a story book. "Lucette, Paul Bunyan and Friends" will entertain over and over, with pages to color and a story to read again and again. Take advantage of this Holiday - Specially priced book. (How about having Joanne in for a booksigning?)

Renee Geving and Cecelia McKeig

Renee Geving and Cecelia McKeig conceived their writing duo while working with two others on the Cass County Heritage Book (The Centennial Book).Their collaboration over the past few years has produced: The Longville Centennial, The Bena Centennial,  Images of Cass County, a pictorial history book, Murder & Mayhem (Actual crimes, supposed crimes and potential crimes taken from newspaper accounts 1897 thru 1938) and The 1898 Battle of Sugar Point.

While Cecelia was teaching, she started a company, “Relative Research,” which in turn has helped the Cass County Historical Society with information she garnered through the years. And, through her company she now has access to many national genealogical and historical records.

Cecelia
has researched, written and published several historical books of her own: Federal Dam, History of Boy River, Remer, Memories of Sugar Point and Bear Island, Bermidji and the earlier edition of 1898 Battle of Sugar Point.

Renee
has been Director of the Cass County Museum and Historical Society for (she claims) a century and a half; which turns out to be twenty-six years. She has done remarkably well with the office, considering the no pay, low pay and few supplies over the years. Volunteers used to be easier to come by, now they are almost non-existent. Getting the displays ready for tourist season also seems to fall into her hands every year.

Renee, with the assistance of several volunteers and retired persons over the past years, updated the society’s alphabetical lists of obituaries in Cass County, referenced through local newspapers. The Society’s records also include Post Masters, Teaching Certificates, Census, Coroner’s Register of Inquests and other items of interest that Renee’s leadership has seen to.

Renee
was one of three individuals responsible for the publication of the Walker on Leech Lake Centennial Book, and one of four (Cecelia joined this one) in the production of the Cass County Heritage Book which was the centennial history.  Both books were normally undertaken throughout the state by three or four committees of thirty-to-forty individuals when these industrious women—who apparently could not delegate too well—planned, wrote, and produced two very well received coffee table books of our area history.

Renee
and Cecelia are also responsible for the publication of the monthly Historical Society Newsletter that is mailed to individuals, as well as Townships and Cities. We wish them well on their writing journey.
