About Us

We are celebrating 16 years in the used-book business. Not many independent bookstores last that long, so it must be my stubborn half-Norwegian heritage that keeps the door open. After all, my mother’s family came from Hell, Norway!

With my husband’s help, our son-in-law’s carpentry, and not a lot of cents or sense, I opened a little store in May of 1991 in what are now the bathrooms (!) of a restaurant.

Because I was then employed full-time, Nina came on board to fill in for me during the weekdays. She stayed for 9½ years and taught this novice how to run a business. When I messed things up, she may have belly-laughed inside but never in my face. I hope to graduate from Retail 101 in a few years.

After having a couple of short-term employees, Sharon joined us and has been a wonderful asset through the last 5 years. Also a reader, and a published author, Sharon shares my obsession for keeping everything neat and alphabetized.

Our bookstore is now in its fourth (and final) location—this time it’s on Walker’s main street. It’s a final location because no one wants to help us move again. Ever.

We have over 40,000 books. Our showroom displays a little more than 15,000, and our three storage rooms hold the rest on genre & alphabetized shelving. We also have hundreds of thriller and horror comics; unread and always on sale.

We have given thousands of overstocks to libraries and charities throughout the years, and despite watching incoming books we have to learn to turn away a few more. We remove dated books each year, as our customers prefer excellent, current, like-new paperbacks. We also try to have 200 or so hardcovers on hand, keeping to the popular-author theme.

Our pride and joy: Area Authors. We do not, at this point, hold book signings, but believe me we DO promote, promote, promote. There are a lot of talented writers located right here in Northern Minnesota.

As a board member of the Cass County Historical Society, I believe fully in preserving our heritage. Strange as this may seem, we have already lost one of our museum buildings in Walker to a city-owned liquor store.

As one of the three authors of the Walker Centennial Book, and one of four authors of the Cass County Heritage Book, I’m thrilled at your purchases. The excitement we felt at unloading a semi full of our books just cannot be explained. However, those boxes of books were heavy!

Come in and visit. (I really mean “come in and BUY” but Sharon says that’s tacky.) We do like to visit, learn a little about you, about the authors and storylines of the books you read. We even give a free bookmark with your purchase. Wow.

Have a GREAT DAY – and - HAPPY READING!
